Push for decolonization of education

March 11, 2020 by marlyn ramirez 325 Comments

As of Fall 2018, the student demographic on campus is 63% Hispanic, 13% White, 7% Non-resident foreign students, 5% African American, 5% Asian, 4% Unknown, 2% are two or more races, and 1% Native American/Alaskan Native or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander according to CSUSB'S statistical data. With this kind of diversity in an institution, students and faculty are pushing toward a decolonized education for curriculums that reflect their background, experiences, and struggles. The need to decolonize education inspires many students to pursue research beyond what is taught to them, and to search for buried archives that represent their roots that haven’t been read. Vanessa Ovalle … [Read more...] about Push for decolonization of education

Learning about impostor syndrome from the summit for Social Justice

February 18, 2020 by Matt Santos 305 Comments

As a Cal State, not many political and social events or organizations are offered on campus, as compared to UCs. However, on Friday, February 7, students were given the opportunity to learn more about social justice at the Social Justice Summit, hosted by the Office of Student Engagement. The event started off with a light breakfast for all of the attendees. Attendees had muffins and coffee as they conversed with friends and networked with others before the event. Once it hit 10:00 a.m., attendees were invited to make their way to the Event Centers B and C for the opening speeches. The first to speak was Jacob Chacko, the Assistant Director of Diversity and Inclusion. Chacko set … [Read more...] about Learning about impostor syndrome from the summit for Social Justice

Opinions: on university’s population of female professors

February 18, 2020 by Abigail Ramos 4 Comments

How many professors of color have you had throughout your entire school career? For CSUSB, diversity is big. Representation of different cultures, races, ethnicities, and genders is important to exist in our college community. It shows that everyone is welcomed and matters, no matter what identity one identifies or associates with. Assistant professor of the communication studies department, Liliana Conlisk-Gallegos, expresses that of all full professors in higher education in the U.S., about two percent are women of color and only eight percent are men of color. Conlisk Gallegos says, “I knew it was going to be an uphill battle for me to get my PhD.” From the start of her college … [Read more...] about Opinions: on university’s population of female professors

Challenges of a Hispanic Serving Institution: Is enough being done to ensure sense of belonging among minority students?

November 4, 2019 by Avery Robinson 83 Comments

By Yera Nanan, Avery Robinson, Fatima Gomez, and Graciela Ramirez The lack of representation and weak recruitment of Pan-African/Black students causes the number of Pan-African students to dwindle, said campus community members. CSUSB has two labels: one being a diverse campus, and the other being a Hispanic serving institution (HSI) due to the fact that the campus has a Hispanic population of over 60 percent.  Student Engagement Coordinator, Jane Rodriguez, stated that she does not feel that there is enough representation on campus.  "I think being a Hispanic serving institution it would be great to see more diversity when it comes to upper administration or individuals that … [Read more...] about Challenges of a Hispanic Serving Institution: Is enough being done to ensure sense of belonging among minority students?

Conversations on Diversity

May 15, 2019 by Destiny Johnson 112 Comments

By Julia Carney and Destiny Johnson When people are asked what kind of music they listen to, their response is usually along the lines of “anything but country.” On May 2, Dr. Nadine Hubbs joined CSUSB students and faculty members to help them understand the complex reasons surrounding these opinions.   Conversations on Diversity is an event held three times a year by the University Diversity Committee of CSUSB. Guest speakers are invited to talk about diversity. February 6, 2017 by Emily Anne Espinosa 539 Comments

By Emily Anne Espinosa |News & Politics Editor| Since Trump’s Executive Order: Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States was announced on Jan.27, several campus community members have responded in disagreeance. California State University (CSU) Chancellor Timothy P. White released a CSU Statement on President Trump’s Executive Order on Jan. 30, stating “When something threatens our ability to think beyond our borders and learn from the world as a whole, we will oppose it.” “When something impacts anyone in our CSU community—especially the most vulnerable—it impacts us all.  Therefore, we oppose the divisiveness of the recent executive order, and … [Read more...] about Campus stance against “ban”

Experiencing Florida

June 9, 2016 by Steffanie Martinez 140 Comments

By Steffanie Martinez |Staff Writer| There are vast differences between Florida and California. Firstly, the thing people comment the most on is the weather. Whenever I meet guests while working my shift, and they find out I’m from California, their first comment is always, “What are you doing here? Why would you leave?” I never realized how great California actually is until I got to see it from an outsiders’ perspective. Many of my friends tell me that California is “the dream.” The humidity and constant tropical rain is not something I would like to take back home with me. Yet living in Orlando in particular, has so much beauty that it is hard to allow the weather to … [Read more...] about Experiencing Florida
