Stop the spread of hate

May 5, 2022 by johnmalapitan 200 Comments

Hate crimes have been a problem since the United States of America was founded. America was founded on discrimination of other ethnicities, religions, and other factors that identified individuals as minorities. However, as we move into the present we sometimes forget about these negative crimes or turn a blind eye to it. Even though the 1992 Los Angeles riots for Rodney King and the 2020 George Floyd riots were 28 years apart, they still hold the same emotional weight behind them. Many of us even lived during both of these events and even some of the older generation remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s march at Washington on August 28, 1963. These are events that we must always … [Read more...] about Stop the spread of hate

March 14, 2017 by Archived posts 2 Comments

By Sierra Marrero | Assistant Community Editor Stereotypes—a method to categorize people, can not only used to diminish an individuals self worth but also causes a division from ones own culture. Whether it’s subconsciously or consciously, sociology research shows that we all use stereotypes. Stereotypes are not limited to just race, but are made within the contexts of gender, religion, class, sexuality, etc. As cliché as some people may think stereotypes are when discussing its relevance in society, many underestimate the power it truly holds on people. One riddle included in research conducted by Mikaela Wapman (CAS’14) and Deborah Belle, asked participants to solve this riddle: “A … [Read more...] about Deconstructing the Types

#OscarsStillSoWhite

February 2, 2016 by Archived posts 321 Comments

By Carolyn Solar |Staff Writer| For the second year in a row, the acting category of the Oscars consisted of all white nominations. This alone has raised questions about the diversity of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “The Academy members, also known as the "Oscar voters," range in age from early 40s to late 60s and are all white and male,” according to BET.com. This has people wondering whether this is a test of talent or another case of blatant discrimination. Actress Jada Pinkett Smith decided to take to social media to note her disapproval. She posted a video saying that she refused to support an award show that lacked diversity and that she would … [Read more...] about #OscarsStillSoWhite

A Culture, Not A Costume

October 26, 2015 by Archived posts 89 Comments

By Erica Wong |Copy Editor| Cultural appropriation is already a problem in fashion and pop culture at large. However, each year on Halloween, people find it acceptable to imitate and ridicule cultural symbols that aren’t theirs. Cultural appropriation happens when elements from a minority culture are copied by members of the dominant culture and used outside of their original cultural context – “sometimes even against the expressed, stated wishes of representatives of the originating culture,” according to Wikipedia. The term cultural appropriation is frequently confused with cultural assimilation. “Cultural assimilation is the process by which a person or a group’s language … [Read more...] about A Culture, Not A Costume

June 7, 2015 by Kassandra Garcia 464 Comments

By Kassandra Garcia |Staff Writer| Islamophobia in the United States has increased immensely and needs to be stopped.   For those who do not know what that term means, Islamophobia (or anti-Muslim sentiment) is an exaggerated fear, hatred and hostility toward Islam and Muslims.   “It is perpetuated by negative stereotypes resulting in bias, discrimination, and the marginalization and exclusion of Muslims from social, political, and civic life,” according to Gallup, a news source.   Some Americans are trying to justify their fear or hate toward Islam and Muslims by stating that the way they feel is justified because of what occurred during tragic events such … [Read more...] about Rampant US Islamophobia must cease

Title IX and Gender Equity wants to support students

May 8, 2015 by Archived posts 3 Comments

By Cecilia Gutierrez |Staff Writer| Title IX was produced to protect students and allow a helpful network of educated individuals in supporting victims of sexual discrimination, harassment and violence. Title IX was first enacted in 1972 to promote gender equality in athletic law and has since grown to incorporate discrimination on the basis of sex in all aspects of education, and its jurisdiction on and off campus. This means that if a student is sexually assaulted off-campus, they are still protected under Title IX. The Obama Administration has created a White House Task Force to extinguish violence on college campuses. This is the main goal for all Title IX coordinators, and … [Read more...] about Title IX and Gender Equity wants to support students

Vetoed bill leads to discrimination discussions

March 7, 2014 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Marie Fernandes |Staff Writer| Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona., vetoed a bill on Feb. 26 that would have discriminated against the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and LGBT. The Senate Bill 1062 has been a hot topic for debate due to the key phrases used in the bill “because of religious beliefs.” Gov. Brewer said, “I sincerely believe that Senate Bill 1062 has the potential to create more problems. The bill could divide Arizona in ways we cannot even imagine and no one would ever want.” Initially I did not think the bill would have infringed on people’s rights as businesses reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. However with a better understanding now I think it would be … [Read more...] about Vetoed bill leads to discrimination discussions
