CSUSB cheer tryouts are coming up on June 5; don’t forget to mark your calendars!
“We are looking for experienced cheerleaders who are strong in cheer, dance, stunting and tumbling,” stated Head Coach SuZanne McDonald.
“We hold all of our team members to a high standard as they set the example for CSUSB as well as in the community, volunteering with local organizations,” continued McDonald.
Tryouts will be held in PE 104 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Brushing up on tumbling and hitting all your motions are great ways to prep for cheer tryouts.
Tumbling is a very important part of cheerleading.
Back walkovers, cartwheels, backhand springs, back tucks, fulls and double fulls are some tumbling skills you can work on. Having a good, strong handstand is the key to being a good tumbler.
A back walkover is where the cheerleader bends backwards into an arched position with hands making contact with the ground before flipping to land back on the ground.
A cartwheel is performed by bringing the hands to the floor one at a time while the body inverts. The legs travel over the body while one or both hands are on the floor, and then the feet return to the floor.
Back handspring is where the cheerleader jumps backwards in a back-bend onto his or her hands and then quickly pushes from their hands to their feet.
Back tuck is where the cheerleader jumps backwards and flips without putting their hands down, landing back on his or her feet. It can also be done going forward, which is called a front tuck.
A full is a move where a cheerleader flips while doing a full twist, while a double full is the same as a full except with a double twist.
Sharp and tight motions is what you want to aim for.
Some motions you can practice are your high V, low V, T and half T.
A high V is a basic motion where the cheerleader has both arms fully extended and locked into a “V” shape and a low V is the same as a high V just facing upside down.
T is a motion where both arms are straight out at shoulder level, while a half T is a motion where both arms are straight bent at the elbow with fists at your chest.
Some jumps you can practice are toe touch, double toe touch, pike and herkie.
The most common jump performed is a toe touch. You split your legs to the sides with toes pointed and knees directed upwards, while the arms remain in a T position, and a double toe touch is the same, you are just doing it twice in a row.
A pike is when you are bent at the waist with both legs straight out at a 90 degree angle.
A herkie is a jump characterized by one leg bent backwards towards the ground and the other straight out to the side.
To help with jumping higher, practice your jumps with ankle weights on. If you jump high with them on when you take them off they’ll be even higher.
Being a cheerleader is a fun experience to enjoy while representing your school and cheering on the sports teams.
To be a cheerleader, you have to have a good attitude and be able to pump up the crowd.
Coaches will be looking at attitude at tryouts to make sure you can get along with others and work well with a team, as well as being peppy and happy to do so.
