Campus radio station continues to operate in a pandemic

Coyote Radio shares their experiences on how they navigated their services throughout the pandemic-related campus closure. The Coyote Radio station is located below the John M. Pfau Library and hosts student DJs, social media managers, and a student promotions department. Before the pandemic, students held live shows in the radio production booth on a daily basis to connect with and inform their peers on campus and provide information on what is happening. Kelli Cluque is the Operations Manager of Coyote Radio and Advertising. This July will mark her third year in the position. Did you know that below the John M. Pfau Library sits the Coyote Radio Station? The Coyote Radio Station has been around more than a decade on campus, promoting, advertising and interacting with the campus community. They participate in events happening on campus and off-campus and they want to become a vibrant part of the campus community culture.  The radio station is run by Professor Penny Drake-Green, Alfredo Cruz, Kelli Cluque and the students of CSUSB. Coyote Radio has a message for you, so listen up! “Come on over and talk to us! Coyote Radio is open to all students and faculty,” said Co-Operations Manager Alfredo Cruz. They want your input on how to make the station better. The station is located between Pfau library and the Cave on the lowest level of the building. They have many opportunities for students and faculty members to take advantage of. Coyote Radio plays music from local bands 24/7, and they even cover many events on campus. Second wave of shops opened across campus

After last year's grand opening of shops at University Parkway, the second wave of shops have recently opened, expanding students' food options. The grand opening of the second phase of shops on University Parkway took place on January 11, 2020, and was located on Northpark Blvd., right across from CSUSB. This event started at 12p.m and finished at 3 p.m. The new shops that opened were Fire Wings, VCA Northside Animal Hospital, Afters Ice Cream, Asian Fusion Eatery, and Poketology.  This event was open to everybody and many people came out to celebrate this grand opening. Splash and Dash by Julia Carney and Brianna Mendoza

Coyote Radio and the CSUSB Department of Housing and Residential Education joined forces on Thursday, May 30, for the first ever Splash and Dash event. Students were able to participate after checking in with their student IDs and receiving a Coyote Radio stamp. A live DJ from Coyote Radio was set up in front of the volleyball court, playing upbeat songs students to the SV quad. Free food such as sub sandwiches, chips, sodas, and candy were available to students at the event. The snow cone booth was consistently busy, with students waiting in line for their free summer treat. Flavors varied from strawberry to watermelon to pina colada and many more. Alfedo Cruz: “We’re looking to get more bands interacting with us”

Alfredo Cruz, one of two Co-managers of Coyote Radio and Advertising, explains the importance of local bands and the Coyote Radio. Cruz has been in management for 10 years with audio production and on-air hosting. Due to studying broadcasting at the University of Texas in Austin he was able to gain some insight into the radio and audio industry. He believes that all of this experience has prepared him for Coyote Radio since radio production has been something he has grown to do and love. Cruz has had experience with radio stations. He serves as the general manager of NPR and PBS an affiliate of KVCR on channel 24 and 91.9 FM. The Roots of Coyote Radio en Español

Coyote Radio en Español is a special program of Coyote Radio, directed by Dr. Gallegos-Ruiz and Lacey Kendall. The program started in 2009 when Lacey Kendall, Director of Coyote Radio, met two students that wanted to start a show in Spanish. Student volunteers directed the show for a few years until they graduated.Later, Dr. Gallegos, a professor of Communication, spoke to Kendall and asked if there was a way to involve her students in a journalist media broadcast experience. “She was the one who brought it back to life and told me, how about instead of sending you two students, I’ll put the whole class on task,” said Kendall. The groundwork for the event has been ongoing since early April as practicum students are faced with marketing, promoting, and ticket sales for 90s Rewind.
