Are We Being Too Careless? Data Suggests that Removing Masking Mandates at CSUSB Might Be the Cause to the Rise of COVID Cases
By: Alex Kraskowsky, John Salas, Rigo Barragan For the past two years CSUSB has enforced campus-wide mask mandates to try to keep the students safe while returning to in person classes as well as trying to reduce infection rates. While it is mandatory that all students and staff must be vaccinated in order to even step foot on campus, it is still possible for anyone to be infected with the COVID-19 virus even with masks on. However for a lot of students masks seemed to become an inconvenience since everywhere else in California the mask mandates had been lifted for indoor and outdoor activities. The university issued a statement on March 7, 2022 that said the school would be lifting all … [Read more...] about Are We Being Too Careless? The DEN: fighting food insecurity
By Brittanie Gutierrez |Staff Writer| Food insecurity is a topic that is rarely brought up, often excused by the thought "not happening to me, so it must not be happening." According to the California Association of Food Banks, one out of eight Californians suffer from food insecurity, that's 5.4 million people that do not know where or when they will be getting their next meal. The DEN is CSUSB's very own food pantry that provides students who are going through food insecurity with food and hygiene products. “Our food bank is unique in that it is almost exclusively stocked by the campus. Opinion: Homeless People are More than Just a Number
By Saeed Villanueva |Staff Writer| Within the media, we have seen talks about the homeless population being a problem in Los Angeles and San Bernardino County. This usually comes in forms of language, because the homeless are referred to as a problem or as a number rather than a person. I admit I have been guilty of this in the past of seeing someone homeless and disregarding them without acknowledging that these are real people. These people have names, families and come from different places. The media on the other hand generally portrays the homeless as a burden to society and puts the blame on them for being the problem rather than focusing on them as individuals. It is … [Read more...] about Opinion: Homeless People are More than Just a Number
Invisible Dropouts
By Saeed Villanueva |Staff Writer| High school graduation rates are on the rise in San Bernardino, but are still below state average. San Bernardino has suffered from low high school graduation rates for years, but has been on a gradual incline since 2010. According to the California Department of Education, the graduation rates for San Bernardino County schools in 2015-2016 was 82.6 percent. The dropout rate was 10.4 percent, which correlates to 3,408 students. For San Bernardino, this is a good sign, considering the rate was as high as … [Read more...] about Invisible Dropouts
