By Charlotte Iradjpanah   Twas the night before Congress, And throughout the White House, The whole place was vacant, Except for the louse.   The chefs and the ushers, And tailors and maids, Were tired of working, Without getting paid.   The Potomac was frozen, As thick as can be, No worker there, To collect passage fees.   With Cohen admitting, And Flynn having lied, Natalia, the Russian, May have just been a spy!   When all of a sudden, Word arose, Trump had been talking, Behind private doors.   Pence as his vice, Was in such a mess, And too damn embarrassed, To make an … [Read more...] about Expressions: The Fallen Holiday Angel

Congress inaction; land and water fund runs dry

October 12, 2015 by Archived posts 3 Comments

By Raequan Harrison |Staff Writer| National and state parks have part of their funding due to the expiring of the law Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) by Congress. The LWCF’s purpose was to protect wildlife forestries and lands to provide a safe place for the public to visit. State and national parks haven’t always been open to the public. They were opened and maintained by the government under this law. In 1965, the bill was signed into law “to establish a land and water conservation fund to assist the States and Federal [H. R. 3846] agencies in meeting present and future outdoor recreation demands and needs of the American people, and for other purposes,” according to the … [Read more...] about Congress inaction; land and water fund runs dry

Minimum wage should go up

October 31, 2014 by Archived posts 58 Comments

By Janeth Jaimes |Staff Writer| Low-wage workers and low-income families would benefit significantly from the minimum wage increase to $10 an hour by 2016, as proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. I believe an increase in the minimum wage will be helpful for the working class by boosting the family income of low-wage workers. The increase will help Americans maintain a good quality of life to support their families. President Obama has supported raising the minimum wage so hard-working Americans can make a decent wage for a day’s work. Many students, including myself, work in order to meet educational goals and living expenses. This causes a lot of … [Read more...] about Minimum wage should go up

Plan to raise minimum wage

February 21, 2014 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Daniel DeMarco |Asst. Features Editor| President Barack Obama said Congress should finish the job he started by raising the minimum wage from the current federal minimum wage $7.25 to $10.10. “I make minimum wage and even $8 sucks, $7.25 would just be ridiculous. A nice raise would really help me out and I know I’m not the only one,” said student Ken Mitchell. Obama said that Americans deserve to know where the officials they elect stand, and if they oppose the wage increase then Americans should ask for reasons. “Obama is right. They need to let us know why they can’t agree on anything because this congress hasn’t done s*** for us,” said student Faye Davis. Not … [Read more...] about Plan to raise minimum wage

President’s address covers vital issues

January 31, 2014 by Archived posts 3 Comments

By Courtney Mata |Staff Writer| President Barack Obama called for a wage increase, a removal of troops in the Middle East, and a reduction of foreign oil usage in his State of the Union address. Obama is trying to restore our nation’s trust because many Americans are discouraged by our previous year. Congress has yet to support Obama’s goals, according to Washington Post staff writers David Nakamura and David A. Fahrenthold. “Instead of pledging to fix the mess, the president was now promising to find ways around it, and change policies on his own authority,” said Nakamura and Fahrenthold in The Washington Post. “Obama returned to a familiar problem, Washington’s bitter and stalemated … [Read more...] about President’s address covers vital issues

Students need to become aware of current events

October 18, 2013 by Archived posts 2 Comments

By Andy Quintana |Staff Writer| We cannot pinpoint the exact date when the Roman Empire fell, but we sure as hell can identify when our country almost defaulted to ruin. Our country has just experienced what can be called “national shame day” on Oct. 17. Shameful because our country almost defaulted, and all we did was use band-aids to cover up the holes in the dam. We however have chosen to be ill-informed and unaware. This needs to change. We need people, young people, to become informed citizens, but most importantly, we need them to actually care. When we don’t care about what’s going on, we expect others to do the caring for us. Westorlandonews.com places the blame … [Read more...] about Students need to become aware of current events
