By Alec Escarcega Big Bear, California, is usually a place for tourists to enjoy many activities such as Snowboarding/Skiing, exploring the village, enjoying water sports on the lake, Oktoberfest, or even camping during the seasons. To most, it’s exactly that, but to young filmmakers, it is an area of possibility regarding location. A group of CSU students decided Big Bear was the perfect backdrop for a horror film. I found them through a listing online looking for funding for the film and asked if I could join the crew as a BTS photographer/videographer to which they agreed, and I was on my way. Despite sounding like the beginning of a horror story considering the … [Read more...] about CSU students head to the mountains to shoot a horror film

The Little Things
Big Bear Lake Photo courtesy of Ashlee Reed By Ashlee Reed A few years ago my boyfriend took me up to his grandfather’s cabin in Big Bear. It was my first time visiting the quiet, in the off-season, town. I was awestruck. It was hard to believe that a town so beautiful and different could be right in my backyard. To my boyfriend and me, Big Bear has become a special place, a mini-vacation for us, one that we can afford and have the time for. We don’t do much except visit family, walk around the village, even attempting some hikes. We've have many memories there. Our most recent trip up there was with a few friends. We walked along the lake, even when we're not supposed to, enjoying … [Read more...] about The Little Things

Headlights or Bust
By Julia Matulionis |Staff Writer| Due to resulting injuries and accidents on Highyway 18, nine new highway signs are being installed, instructing drivers to turn their headlights on during the day. This section of road starts at the Crestline Cut-off and continues until the Big Bear Dam. The plan for the new signs were put in place after local residents expressed their safety concerns for the highway at a community meeting last year. Present at the meeting was Caltrans, a state agency responsible for highway, bridge and rail transportation planning, construction and maintenance. "Some people brought this idea up to our panel members and our staff while we were there," said Terri … [Read more...] about Headlights or Bust
