David Ortiz’s Hall of Fame induction causes stir among baseball fans

February 14, 2022 by Matt Santos 1,796 Comments

By Anneliese Goetz and Carlos Giron (Contributing Writers) The Baseball Writers' Association of America voted to induct 10-time All-Star David Ortiz into the Baseball Hall of Fame on January 25, causing upset fans to point out his history with performance enhancing drugs. Ortiz received 307 votes, giving him 77.9% of the vote, which is above the required 75%, making him this year's only ballot elected into Cooperstown. This year was the first year David Ortiz, or “Big Papi”, was eligible to be added to the Baseball Hall of Fame. His quick acceptance makes him the 58th player to be voted in, within their first year of eligibility. While there were many who praised Ortiz’s … [Read more...] about David Ortiz’s Hall of Fame induction causes stir among baseball fans

Vox pop: How are CSUSB athletes staying in shape during the pandemic?

December 1, 2020 by Alyssa Beck 150 Comments

CSUSB student athletes tell us whether or not the pandemic has made it difficult for them to stay in shape.  Photos of the student athletes were provided by the CSUSB Athletics department. Justine Ziranda - Cross Country; Senior, Art Education Major "Being on both the cross country and track and field team have been very different and difficult during this time. Having your teammates next to you every practice motivates you to do better, and we don’t have that right now. Running on our own can only do so much for us. We like competing and seeing our progress over time. Running on our own doesn’t give us the push that most of us need. But to stay positive, I’ve made one of my … [Read more...] about Vox pop: How are CSUSB athletes staying in shape during the pandemic?

Senior athletes offered another year of eligibility

November 17, 2020 by Alyssa Beck 37 Comments

As athletes in different schools across the country are being allowed back to practice, CSU teams are still waiting for the announcement that will allow them to do the same.  After dedicating most of their lives to baseball or softball, senior athletes' final hoorah was abruptly canceled right at the beginning of their spring season due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the United States. Although complete cancellation is not the outcome that anyone wanted, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) made the decision to give college athletes in spring sports the opportunity to return to play for another year.  When the NCAA released the statement, “The Division II Council … [Read more...] about Senior athletes offered another year of eligibility

November 10, 2020 by Eddie Lopez 229 Comments

After 32 years, the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series. For more than three decades, Dodgers fans all across the country have been waiting to see their beloved southern California team take the gold. With many celebrations come many frustrations on the opposing side. Among one of the happy fans was lifelong Dodgers fan, Cassandra Gonzales. Gonzales, a child development major and a junior at Cal Poly Pomona, has long waited for the moment to see the boys in blue hold up the commissioner's trophy. Gonzales stated, "I have wanted to see the Dodgers win the World Series for years now! It's the first time I get to see my team hold up the trophy and I hope that they will do it … [Read more...] about Students react to Dodgers’ victory

Baseball stands the test of time

October 14, 2020 by Eddie Lopez 1 Comment

Baseball has been the American pastime since the MLB's establishment in 1869. While baseball is still viewed in living rooms all over the world, it has been overshadowed by other sports in recent years. Although baseball has had its ups and downs over the years with steroid scandals and a strike that nearly ended the future of the game, baseball has managed to stay on top, and baseball fans wouldn’t want it any other way.  If you were to ask people who are not baseball fans, whether they feel that baseball is dead or not, they will not hesitate to tell you that the answer is “it absolutely has.” Baseball fans, however, would tell you that people who say baseball is a dying sport are … [Read more...] about Baseball stands the test of time

Major League Baseball is officially back

April 4, 2018 by Lauren 4 Comments

The 2018 MLB season may have started on March 29, the earliest Opening Day in MLB history, but nearly two weeks later, some of the teams were still hosting their own home openers. Of the 30 teams, 13 started at home on March 29, while two other home teams were delayed a day due to inclement weather. The other teams who started the season away from their home fields had their home openers spread throughout the first two weeks of April, with the last home opener going to the Cubs on April 9. Each team had new ways to celebrate the 2018 season, with the most popular being changes or additions to their in-stadium food selection. Other teams also upgraded their scoreboards in one way or … [Read more...] about Major League Baseball is officially back

Patiently waiting for Spring training

January 23, 2018 by Kyle Barry 40 Comments

Baseball fans are excited to say goodbye to winter storms, and hello to spring sunshine, as Major League Baseball's (MLB) spring training will officially begin play on Feb. 23. Cold weather is a rarity in Southern California. But blistering cold temperatures elsewhere in the country render us the lucky ones. Imagine having to shovel snow every morning to get to your car or 45-mph winds and snow impeding your five block stroll to the office. The daily grind of the elements can be exhausting. A day at the ballpark may be just the remedy, which is another reason why millions of fans are counting down the days until spring (training). Not only has the weather been stark, so has the … [Read more...] about Patiently waiting for Spring training

Baseball seniors say farewell

May 19, 2017 by Lauren 598 Comments

By Lauren Jennings |Sports Editor| The time of year for teammates to say goodbye to their graduating seniors has once again returned, and the baseball team is getting ready to say farewell to 11 players. Dillon Fahr Fahr (No. 3) joined the Coyotes in 2015 after playing two years at Mesa Community College. His first year at CSUSB, he played in 36 games, starting 28 of them and batting .235. In his second year, he played just 10 games before suffering a season-ending injury. Fahr still made good use of what little playing time he had, hitting .241 and recording two doubles and a home run. Fahr hit .316 in his final year with the Coyotes, scoring a team-leading 38 runs. He led … [Read more...] about Baseball seniors say farewell

Scorekeeping for the Coyotes

May 4, 2017 by Lauren 4 Comments

By Lauren Jennings |Sports Editor| For as long as I can remember, I have attended baseball games with my family, whether to see the Dodgers, Angels or my hometown team, the Quakes. Baseball was always a family event for me, although I did not always sit and watch games the way I do today. My main reasons for going to games were the mascots, food and fireworks. What happened on the field was the least of my worries as long as my team scored runs and won. Over time though, I became more interested in the game itself and started watching them in person and at home on TV. As I grew older, my dad decided it was time for me to learn how to keep score at professional baseball games, … [Read more...] about Scorekeeping for the Coyotes

First Spring Training with Wells and Ouellette

April 24, 2017 by Gabriel Ramos 40 Comments

By Gabriel Ramos | Contributing Writer | The start of Minor League Baseball means it's time for former Coyotes Tyler Wells and Will Ouellette to head back to the pitcher's mound for their newly assigned teams. However, before Wells and Ouellette traveled to their 2017 team destinations, they participated in Spring Training in Florida. Wells was a starting pitcher for the Coyotes for three years. The Minnesota Twins drafted him in the 15th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft. Wells was assigned to the rookie-level Elizabethton Twins, where he racked up five wins and two losses while posting a 3.23 earned run average (ERA). He made 10 appearances all starts. He also … [Read more...] about First Spring Training with Wells and Ouellette
