From Feb. 19-21, UDC preformed 24 dances each night with Saturday having two shows, a matinee at 2:30 p.m., and its regular showing at 7:30 p.m., which included a little bit of everything from jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, tap, Latin, and gospel. UDC members are not just current CSUSB students but also graduates, professional dancers, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and cousins. UDC’s season starts in September with open auditions for those in any type of dance level. The … [Read more...] about “Lights, camera, dance”

Mojalet Dance Company bodies do the talking

October 11, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Emmanuel Gutierrez |Asst. Features Editor| The Mojalet Dance Company expressed heartfelt emotion through movement in conjunction with Rhythm Talk Music’s heart-pounding jam sessions on Oct. 8. The percussion trio and their instruments were bathed in a surreal light fusion of orange and yellow, much like that of an oversaturated sunset. A male and female dancer swayed on stage, reminiscent of the ancient martial art of the praying mantis. “It was an interplay between dance and music. It was lovely,” said student Nicole Lopez. The dancers spouted grand epics with wordless dialogue; the snare and bass drums composed the backdrops to their graceful fables. Their twisting, … [Read more...] about Mojalet Dance Company bodies do the talking

By Carly Woolley |Staff Writer| The University Dance Company (UDC) presented their annual showcase “For the Love of Dance” on Feb. 13. They left the audience in shock with their quick transitions from ballet to street hip hop. UDC is comprised of Cal State students, alumni and community members. These dancers have been diligently working on choreography and rehearsing their routines since September of last year. For many, the UDC is an outlet to display their passion for dance. Dance is an art form that requires strength, flexibility, rhythm and passion. It is such an extremely straining and demanding activity, and many strive to attain the skillful technique it … [Read more...] about University Dance Company’s “For the Love of Dance”

A classical representation of the art

January 29, 2014 by Archived posts 8 Comments

By Chrisoula Baroudos |Staff Writer| As one of the first formal styles of dance, ballet is a classical representation of the art. I have been recently teaching ballet for three years at Krystle Beck Dance Company (KBDC) in Apple Valley on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. I started dancing ballet at age four. I have been dancing ballet for over 15 years. It has helped form the person that I am today. Ballet is a great way to show discipline and grace. It shows how something so difficult can look so effortless. There were times when I wanted to quit because I found it too difficult. My mother kept me motivated to never give up, and to keep dancing. I love that I had the … [Read more...] about A classical representation of the art

Hula-La teaches students floor work

By Gabbie Corral |Staff Writer| The glamour, glitz and risqué art of burlesque dancing comes to CSUSB. The Women’s Resource Center in the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) held a workshop on May 7 that taught students the history and evolution of burlesque dancing as well as choreography typically found in modern performances. “I’ve always liked burlesque. I’ve seen it on TV and I just love the costumes, so joining my friend was fun even though I wasn’t that good at the moves,” said student Carolina Mejia. Burlesque dancing first originated in Europe during the early 18th century as a form of theatrical entertainment performed primarily by women. The early performances were … [Read more...] about Burlesque workshop sassifies students
