We have all seen the memes about “Netflix and Chill” blasted all over our social media accounts and timelines, but with all jokes and snide remarks aside, what does “Netflix and Chill” really mean?
“Netflix and Chill” means going to your partner’s house and participating in sexual acts while Netflix content plays in the background, according to Urban Dictionary.
So basically, it’s a new, euphemistic expression for making out or hooking up with a movie mentioned as an excuse.
In 2012, the expression was used more innocently—to hang out and watch Netflix, according to fusion.net.
There was no sexual association with “Netflix and Chill.”
In the summer of 2014, dozens of “Netflix and Chill” tweets were posted with wink emoticons, sneakily—or not—sending the message that people had alternate intentions.
In April 2015, “Netflix and Chill” was added to Urban Dictionary because of its prominence in today’s culture.
Three months later, Netflix encountered the “Netflix and Chill” meme and posted one on their Tumblr page, basically acknowledging this linguistic movement.
Students pondered whether or not “Netflix and Chill” is a genuine expression to hook up or used tongue in cheek.
“Yes, ‘Netflix and Chill’ is a thing. For me, when I’m comfortable with somebody, that’s the only thing I feel like doing sometimes,” stated CSUSB alumnus Ryan Libby.
“I believe it implies a subliminal message of engaging in intercourse. However, it’s mainly used as a joke now,” stated student Ariana Cano.
Students have mixed feelings on whether or not “Netflix and Chill” is considered a date.
“It’s not a date to me,” stated Libby.
On the contrary, Cano said, “Sure. Whether or not one is really going to watch Netflix and just hang out or going to engage in intercourse, I believe it’s looked at as a date. Of course depending on how the individual defines a ‘date.’”
Is it financially thrifty or just a cheap date?
Zamora is on the fence about it being a cheap date or financially thrifty..
“If both persons are employed then this could be a cheap date where perhaps you don’t feel like going out and spending a lot of money on a date, considering movie tickets keep getting more and more expensive,” stated Zamora.
“If both parties are unemployed or only work a few hours, it could be financially thrifty. You don’t have to spend any or very little and you can still hang out and watch a movie or your favorite TV shows,” continued Zamora.
Landaeta thinks that there may be a level of miscommunication when saying “Netflix and Chill.”
“If you don’t know the real meaning of it, you more than likely thought you were just going to watch Neflix and hang out, and got the surprise of your life,” stated Landaeta.
Libby stated that “Netflix and Chill” is just a trend in our culture.
“I think it’s just a trend right now. Social media always has trends and Netflix is popular and sex sells, so unfortunately, Netflix and sex are being sold together,” stated Libby.
“Netflix and Chill,” the new date or nah?
