Museums are a wonderful place to experience cultural and artistic treasures, and the historic city of Riverside offers some of the best museums in our local community.
The Riverside Art Museum is located in the heart of Downtown Riverside. It is home to many local and international artists and is a great place for art lovers to quietly roam and experience the world of art.
The museum will take you on a trip to discover, learn and be inspired through their galleries where there is something to match everyones interests and challenge their perceptions of what art is.
It offers a mix of solo, group and permanent collection exhibits featuring traditional, contemporary and modern art. It also regularly displays the work of some of the best artists in the world, including Robert Williams, Takashi Murakami, Shag, Kathe Kollwitz, James Gurney, Marc Chagall, Millard Sheets, Shepard Fairey, Corita Kent, and Don O’Neill.
The museum also features exhibits highlighting the works of talented local artists and high school students.
If you are interested in learning art, classes are available through the museum that teach art history and technique. They have many free family activities, lectures, book readings, signings, film screenings, and their Blue Door Museum Store filled with items you won’t find elsewhere. This is a small art museum but it’s a delightful place to visit if you have time to spend in Riverside.
The UCR/California Museum of Photography is located in downtown Riverside.
This museum provides a cultural presence and educational resource to the general public. The photographic exhibition examines the history of photography and showcases current practices in photography and related media. This building also presents programs that recognize the variety of complexity of cultural experience and explores the relationship between traditional expression and contemporary practice.
UCR students are involved in every aspect of the museum’s program. They are the ones that run everything starting from curatorial research to collections management to exhibition installation and administration.
