As everyone is getting adjusted to class schedules and homework assignments, the women’s Coyote volleyball team is also getting used to their winning streak this season.
The Lady Coyotes hope to repeat history and make their way into playing at the championship game this year.
Last year the women’s volleyball team made it all the way to the Division II National Championship game. Last year’s defeat was obviously bitter but it has also offered great experience to the team and has strengthened their motivation. They are playing every game with intensity and giving it their all against every school.
“We are definitely playing with the very real expectation that we will play in the championship game,” said Coach Kim Cherniss.
This team has won three conference championships and has won the NCAA west regional title. The seniors on the team are definitely bringing a calm intensity to the court and the intelligence gained by past experience.
This year the women on the team are not getting too rattled as they know what to expect and that has only strengthened them more.
On Sept. 23, against Chico State, the Coyote women played with such determination and strength that a Chico State player happened to be at the receiving end of a ball straight to the face.
Our Coyotes have their school spirit but they also cheered on the Chico State player after she signaled she was fine and kept going with the game.
The Lady ‘Yotes won 3-0 against Chico State and also capture victories against Cal State Stanislaus and Cal Baptist University.
The team this season has more self confidence on the court and with eight seniors on board they are hoping to make their last year the best ever.
Our Coyote women are not letting the past dictate their future, they are going out to the court with calm heads and giving it their all in the games. It seems as if last year’s loss against Concordia-St. Paul has left the team with great experience and insight on the improvements that the team must make in order to finally bring home a championship.
The seniors on the team are refusing to think of anything else. The ability of this volleyball team is undisputed as their wins speak for themselves.
The only obstacle that the team faces according to Coach Kim Cherniss is the ability to “terminate out of system;” to not let the chaos that might be going on the court affect the players.
The next home game for the coyote volleyball girls is on Saturday, Oct. 22 against Cal State L.A. at 7 p.m.. Make sure to mark your calendars and support our girls while they play against the Golden Eagles and continue to progress towards their National Championship goal.
