Butts and guts and TRX work together

The Student Health and Recreation Center (Rec Center) has indoor sports such as basketball, soccer, and volleyball, however, a program called Group Ex has various scheduled exercise classes.

One, in particular, is the Total Body Resistant Exercise (TRX).

While most of the exercise equipment is located on the first floor, the second floor is mainly for group exercise classes such as Butts and Guts, Yoga, and Jiujitsu.

These Group Ex classes are guided by educated instructors who make working out fun and safe.

TRX boot camp, which is hosted by fitness instructor Mike Carim, is a cardio and aerobics program that gives students various options for a workout.

Although Carim had only a few people in his class, he collaborated with the instructor of Butts and Guts, Katherine Brobst.

Now, participants would experience boot camp and Butts and Guts with two instructors,  making sure that every person would push their limits.

Brobst’s Butts and Guts exercise involved circuit training of various and vigorous activities. It mainly focused on your lower body, which includes your legs, gluts, and abs.

It was a great workout, which had participants’ towels drenched with sweat. Despite all the hard work, participants still had a good time, laughing amongst each other and the instructors.

Instructors have designated break times and encourage participants to keep pushing themselves even when they feel they’re unable to go any further.

Although the instructors had break times, they did not make you wait until then to get a drink of water.

When asked about their positions as an instructor both trainers had similar responses when being asked if they enjoyed their jobs.

“I love helping people and making transformations. For example, as an instructor I notice, starting out their squat isn’t perfect and towards the end it’s textbook. That, to me, I know I helped someone, and I love that,” said Brobst.

There are an abundance of options for students to get in or stay in shape, not to mention the amount of classes and programs that are offered.

This led to the belief that maybe there needs to be more awareness of some of these awesome Group Ex exercises.

“They just don’t know what’s offered,” said Carim.

The staff and trainers are very helpful and educated, proving their online slogan, “Fit for any shape”, to be true and inspiring for anyone willing to become healthy and fit.

All information about Group Ex classes and schedules can be found on the Rec Center’s online website at csusbrecsports.com, along with hours, fees, and eligibility.
