Migrant Writing Circle invites undocumented individuals to share their works

CSUSB’s Undocumented Student Success Center (USSC) has created a space for its members under the name of the Migrant Writing Circle where participants can journal together. The group created an original poem this Spring semester titled, “What It Means to Be Undocumented.” According to Dr. Paloma Villegas, an assistant professor in the department of sociology whose research focuses on undocumented migration, this was the first time members worked together on one collaborative piece. “We do take some risks to try new things and I think this was a successful attempt,” said Dr. Villegas. Criminal justice professor comments on campus police officer incident

The investigation of a CSUSB police officer who pulled a gun out on another officer continues as the university declines to comment. Coyote Chronicle has reached out to Joe Gutierrez, the Assistant Director for the Office of Strategic Communication. "We are aware of the incident and an internal investigation is ongoing. Thus, we have no further comment at this time," said Gutierrez. CSUSB police officer currently under investigation

Criminal justice professor comments on campus police officer incident A member of the CSUSB police department is currently under investigation for holding a gun out on another officer. The incident reportedly took place on September 15 during a discussion on mask enforcement. Video surveillance captured the moment, which has been circulating online, where two officers appear to be getting into an argument as one of them, whose face is blurred, pulls his firearm out before putting it back in its slot. Two additional officers can be seen with them and one of them attempts to mediate the situation. Press conference held for new CSU Chancellor

Paying student fees for services not being used this pandemic and several other issues were discussed during the virtual press conference of the new CSU Chancellor, Dr. Joseph Castro on September 30. Having worked as the President of the CSU Fresno campus since 2013, he will begin his role as Chancellor on January 4, 2021. He is also credited as the first Mexican-American Chancellor to be appointed and will become the eighth Chancellor of the CSU.  The event was moderated by Michael Uhlenkamp, the Senior Director of Public Affairs for the CSU outputs of the Chancellor. “Alone Together: Confined in a Connected World,” a new issue of Pacific Review is accepting submissions until May 31, as it prepares for the soft launch date early this June. Angela Peñaredondo, Ph.D., has been the Faculty Editor of the 37-year-old journal for the past two quarters and has worked as a Creative Writing and Digital Humanities Assistant Professor since the Fall of 2018. Pro-choice advocates continue discussion through online platforms

The spread of COVID-19 has pushed people in office to enforce orders that require people to practice social distancing and only go out in public for essential services. One of these services, abortion, has been deemed by many states, such as Texas, to not be an essential service and many clinics are either being shut down or are denied funds to perform the procedure. Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration

Students, faculty, and community members alike gathered to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year. Hosted by the Chinese Student Association and sponsored by ASI, guests were ushered inside SMSU. Kick back for Feminist and Chill

The Women’s Resource Center is the place to be to relax and learn about feminism. On January 13, 2020, they hosted their “Feminist and Chill” event, which was led by three student assistants who welcomed guests with pizza and drinks. Our first “Women Writers Unite”

For the first time ever, the Women’s Resource Center hosted a "Women Writers Unite" event on November 5, 2019, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event had three women writers speaking in the panel about their experiences as writers, as well as the issues they had been faced with in terms of getting published. The three authors appearing at the panel were Pakistani-American Sehba Sarwar, author of Black Wings, Latina Elisa Grajeda-Urmston, author of Soundcheck, and Isabel Quintero, author of Gabi and My Papi has a Motorcycle.
