November 3, 2020 by Dymphna Rocha 53 Comments

College football is a billion-dollar-a-year industry that plays a part in the American sports landscape. According to the NCAA, college football programs had an average revenue of over $100 million in 2019. Like most things in 2020, the season was in jeopardy of being canceled due to the COVID-19. College presidents and athletic directors from different states came together via Zoom to save the season. “#We want to Play” tweets from the country’s most prominent college players, like Trevor Lawrence, and “we need college football” tweets from President Trump applied pressure to the NCAA Leadership to get a season started. The most glaring issue facing the decision-makers was the players' … [Read more...] about Opinion: Safety concerns over playing college football

Opinion: The Electoral College is becoming outdated

November 3, 2020 by Dymphna Rocha 284 Comments

The United States held its fifty-ninth presidential election on November 3. This country, which is often referred to as the beacon of democracy, will continue to use the Electoral College to elect the President. However, it is time to elect a president based on the majority vote, because it is time for the voices of the many to be heard. The definition of democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives - the whole population or all eligible members, and yet, in the 2016 presidential election, only 56% of the Americans found themselves casting votes. The Electoral College may have been a good … [Read more...] about Opinion: The Electoral College is becoming outdated

Pfau Library extends its online services

October 27, 2020 by Dymphna Rocha 132 Comments

With distant learning continuing in the Spring semester, Pfau Library finds ways to further meet the campus community's needs for resources in the virtual space. Cesar Caballero, Dean of Pfau Library, said, “As soon as the pandemic hit and the campus had to pivot to an online mode, the library acquired as much digitized library content (e-books, e-textbooks, etc.) as we could afford since print copies of books were not initially available. That’s the reason we started planning on the retrieval service, which was implemented this semester." Among several resources, Dean Caballero thought the most essential needs to students would be equipment rentals and research assistance. Dean … [Read more...] about Pfau Library extends its online services

UPD continues to work closely with the campus community

October 20, 2020 by Dymphna Rocha 217 Comments

In the aftermath of George Floyd's death, Mike O’Meara of the New York Police Association held a press conference and demanded that the public, legislators, and the press start treating the police with some respect. CSUSB Police Chief Nina Jamsen has a different approach to gaining respect and trust from the CSUSB community. CSUSB, along with the other 22 CSU campus police departments, have publicly denounced police brutality. English major Marlo Brooks, host of Conversations on Race and Policing, says, “We will need more than just a stance on the matter. The future of education should feature more preventative measures to ensure that no future alumnus becomes the next hashtag of unjust … [Read more...] about UPD continues to work closely with the campus community

Is COVID-19 the real boogeyman this Halloween? According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, it might as well be.Various Halloween activities were ranked as low, moderate, or high risk. They recommend people to not mingle with others outside the household, rating activities such as parties, haunted houses, hayrides, and trick-or-treating as high-risk. For those who are feeling sick, live with someone who is at higher risk for disease, have tested positive, are waiting for COIVD-19 test results, or have been in contact with someone who has tested positive, the CDC recommends them to stay home.
