By: Brittany Fugate, Ashley Flores and Joshua Clement The demand for housing is at an all-time high, but the likelihood of being able to afford and survive at the same time is at an all-time low. Most California residents have indicated that the housing crisis is unlike anything we have ever seen before. This has led to many CSUSB students and staff living in fear of not being able to afford to rent or buy a house. California State University San Bernardino professor Dr. Gregory Gondwe shares his experience in trying to find affordable housing. “Last year when I started looking for apartments I spent about almost $600 for application fees and every time I paid, it was occupied and … [Read more...] about CSUSB Students Fear Eviction as Housing Prices Skyrocket by 74.23%

Pfau Library extends its online services

October 27, 2020 by Dymphna Rocha 133 Comments

With distant learning continuing in the Spring semester, Pfau Library finds ways to further meet the campus community's needs for resources in the virtual space. Cesar Caballero, Dean of Pfau Library, said, “As soon as the pandemic hit and the campus had to pivot to an online mode, the library acquired as much digitized library content (e-books, e-textbooks, etc.) as we could afford since print copies of books were not initially available. That’s the reason we started planning on the retrieval service, which was implemented this semester." Among several resources, Dean Caballero thought the most essential needs to students would be equipment rentals and research assistance. Dean … [Read more...] about Pfau Library extends its online services

Homeschool advice during quarantine

May 13, 2020 by Emma Curtis 7 Comments

By Emma Curtis and Tanya Jansen Both veteran and rookie homeschooling parents are giving advice on how to adjust to monitoring their kids' education under quarantine. Ever since COVID-19 caused school districts to temporarily shut down and turn to online teaching, parents are finding it hard to acclimate to a new school environment in their own homes. For many parents who were already homeschooling their children, quarantine learning is no big change.   Lanie Vasquez, a 34-year-old mother of two with one on the way, has been teaching her two sons, Carlos, 6, and Sebastian, 3, at home since they were of the age to attend school. Vasquez is no newbie to homeschooling and … [Read more...] about Homeschool advice during quarantine

Mental health counselor urges the practice of self-care

May 11, 2020 by Tanya Jansen 915 Comments

By Tanya Jansen and Alexis Ramirez Community members are fighting to maintain their self-care rituals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Not implementing tactics for self care, especially during quarantine, can lead to higher levels of anxiety and depression and may cause irritability with people in one’s life, according to licensed mental health counselor Karin Brackebusch.  During quarantine, certain levels of self-care can be lost, since going out with friends, getting out of the house, running errands, and exercising freedom to go outside are some of what constitutes self-care. There are many different ways in which a person can implement tactics of self-care, according to … [Read more...] about Mental health counselor urges the practice of self-care

Student candidates campaign via Internet

April 29, 2020 by Yera Nanan 72 Comments

The 2020 Associated Students Incorporated (ASI) Elections are underway, but the road to victory for candidates has been an uphill battle as cyber campaigning has become the new norm. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, candidates have marketed themselves through various social media platforms and Zoom meetings. Though campaigning has become completely digital, this hasn’t changed the morals, values, and identities that students are choosing to campaign for. “It’s just a learning curve for how we are going to do what we would usually do on a virtual platform. Marketing is going to be a struggle,” said Presidential candidate Sage Keyner. Keyner has been involved in ASI for … [Read more...] about Student candidates campaign via Internet

A Q2S Guide

March 11, 2020 by Kai Watson 713 Comments

The Q2S change is happening in less than six months, and it can be intimidating if you don’t have the correct information. Students worry about not being able to finish on time or taking classes that they shouldn’t need to. Departments set up their own criteria, but as far as general education goes, everyone will have to follow the same requirements. Dr. Craig Seal, who is the former dean of the Office of Undergraduate Studies, spoke about the advantages of teaching on a semester system based on his experience with both approaches. “Quarters are so fast. When you get in and you miss a week because something happens, all of a sudden you’re failing a course and there’s no chance to … [Read more...] about A Q2S Guide

Push for decolonization of education

March 11, 2020 by marlyn ramirez 329 Comments

As of Fall 2018, the student demographic on campus is 63% Hispanic, 13% White, 7% Non-resident foreign students, 5% African American, 5% Asian, 4% Unknown, 2% are two or more races, and 1% Native American/Alaskan Native or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander according to CSUSB'S statistical data. With this kind of diversity in an institution, students and faculty are pushing toward a decolonized education for curriculums that reflect their background, experiences, and struggles. The need to decolonize education inspires many students to pursue research beyond what is taught to them, and to search for buried archives that represent their roots that haven’t been read. Vanessa Ovalle … [Read more...] about Push for decolonization of education
